CBS Radio Internship Day 8

By Dan Rodgers

Today was a great day at the internship. I didn't and still don't feel to great, but it's a really good work environment. The people are all so nice and they really make you feel welcome. Random, I know...but needed to be said.

A much less demanding show today because we only had one guest and no prizes to give away. I didn't even have to post anything to the site because Stacey did it during the show. I worked on writing myself a sports update. Sports updates are done at the top of the hour and essentially consist of top news stories that day.

After the show, Stacey let me go into a studio to record it (she's awesome). After I recorded my update, Stacey came in and listened to it. She critiqued me and recommended some things that I work on and let me go for the weekend. I will be posting my updates to podbean.com and linking them here. Listen to it and let me know what you think.

Refs blow call, Rutgers goes home

By Dan Rodgers

I don't know if anyone saw this game because it wasn't a very "big" game. However, the end of the game was one of the most ridiculous I've ever seen.

There were numorous non-calls in the final minute or two; including reach-ins and over-the-back. Not to mention a few times the ball was knocked out of bounds and it was given to the wrong team, and the correct call looked obvious.

The most controversial thing happened at the very end of the game. With only a few seconds left, Rutgers was down two and tried a long inbounds pass. The pass got batted away and someone from St. John's picked it up, traveled with it, and then stepped out of bounds and threw the ball into the crowd. He traveled with a little over two seconds left and stepped out of bounds with 1.7 seconds left.

Rutgers should have had the ball at about half-court for a chance to tie/win. Unfortunately for Rutgers, the referees didn't make the call and the game was over.

This is absolutely terrible. This group of refs shouldn't be allowed to ref another game this season.

CBS Radio Internship Day 7

By Dan Rodgers

Today was one of the better days at the station. After we had a rush of callers due to the topic of "best looking female athlete," I edited the audio as usual.

However, this time Stacey showed me the station's log. This is a program that records everything that goes out over the air for every station at CBS Radio Baltimore. Not only does it do this, but it keeps the previous four months as well. It updates almost instantly so I was able to edit audio from the 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. time slot just after 1 p.m. Basically, it was really cool.

After the typical editing and posting to the website, Stacey told me that she will show me her sports updates on Thursday. She said I can put things together and I might get the chance to use a studio to record. I'm pretty excited about this and it's awesome that she is giving me the opportunity to look into another area at the station. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll be able to record stuff and post it here. Look for that later.

Can't Buy Me Love

By Dan Rodgers

This NBA season has two big names being talked about for the MVP race. Heat forward LeBron James and Bulls guard Derrick Rose.

Chicago is coincidentally tied for the two-seed in the Eastern Conference with the Miami. However, there is someone who is not being mentioned for the MVP and I think he should be leading the discussion.

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love is dominating the NBA this season and should be the leading MVP candidate.

Love: 20.9 ppg 15.7 rbp 2.5 apg
Rose: 24.6 ppg 4.4 rpg 8.1 apg
James: 26.2 ppg 7.5 rpg 7.1 apg

Love is leading the NBA handily in rebounds, and obviously he isn't going to be anywhere near the top in assists. I understand the Timberwolves (15-49) suck but they would easily set the record for the most losses in a single season without Love. He has a double-double in every game played in December, January and February. He has set the Twolves franchise record for most double-doubles and he is one short of the all-time NBA record of 51 set by Moses Malone in the 1978-1979 season.

I understand the Twolves suck and that will probably mean that Love won't even get consideration, but just consider what the guy is doing on a terrible team. He is shooting 47% from the field, 42% from three-point range (yes he can shoot long distance) and he is 86% from the free-throw line. I mean the guy gets double digit points and rebounds every game and does it efficiently.

All three of those percentages are better than Rose's and they blow James' numbers out of the water except FG% in which James is 2% better. That should mean something in the MVP talk.

So we'll see what happens as we approach the end of the season, but I hope Love destroys the record and wins MVP (and not just because he is on my fantasy team).
