There isn’t usually a lot of notable trade action in the NHL offseason, but the deal that went down yesterday between the Blackhawks and the Thrashers was a big one.The Blackhawks have sent Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, and Brent Sopel to the Atlanta Thrashers for veteran Marty Reasoner, a minor leaguer, a first round and second round draft pick in Friday’s draft.
Byfuglien, Eager, and Sopel were all critical players in Chicago’s Cup run, and now they are gone. I can’t imagine how these guys must be feeling. Heck, they haven’t even gotten their day with the Cup yet. They are going from a potential dynasty, to a team that may not even make it through next season in Atlanta. It’s strictly a result of the salary cap, and I’m sure the Hawks would have rather kept them, but big contracts for Toews, Kane, and Hossa have them up against the cap. Personally I feel bad for these guys, but they are professional athletes and I’m sure the big checks they will be getting from the Thrashers will help them get over the disappointment of the trade.
In other trade news, the Montreal Canadiens have sent goaltender Jaroslav Halak (no that isn’t a typo) to St. Louis for two players, both are young and neither are stars.Halak is up for a new contract and the Canadiens decided to go with Carey Price as their every day goalie instead of Halak, who carried the team to the third round of the playoffs. The Canadiens have always loved Price, but I have to say I’m not sure I agree with the decision that was made.Halak regularly outplayed Price during their time together in Montreal, but apparently the Montreal brass aren’t ready to give up on Price just yet.
The NHL Entry Draft is tomorrow (Friday) night from StaplesCenter in Los Angeles.Edmonton picks first followed by the Boston Bruins. Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin are projected to be the first two picks, and will probably be the only two players from this years’ draft that go straight to the NHL.I’m looking forward to see if there will be more “wheelin’ and dealin” at the draft.I’m off to New Jersey this weekend to try and get my hands on some game used Devils equipment.I’m looking forward to checking in with the Devils fan base.
No surprise to anyone the Washington Wizards selected John Wall first over in the 2010 NBA Draft. We expect the Wiz to ask Gilbert Arenas to slide over and play shooting guard. If Gil does so, and does so well then the Wizards could surprise people and make the playoffs next season.
The 76ers followed by taking Evan Turner...oh gosh...another surprise...
Some pretty weird stuff going on though...Kentucky's Eric Bledsoe fell to Oklahoma City at 18 and James Anderson fell to number 20 (he was projected 10).
Teams are proposing trades like crazy...reports that Oklahoma City is looking to trade Eric Bledsoe to the Clippers and get Cole Aldrich from the Hornets. There are also reports of the Bulls trading players to the Wizards to relieve cap room.
If any of the trades actually go through or any other crazy stuff happens...I'll report back.
The past few days have been rather exciting in the United States of America. On Wednesday June 23, the United States faced a win or go home scenario against Algeria in the World Cup. It wasn't exactly a win-or-go-home scenario until England scored against Slovenia.
Regulation time had expired with the scored still tied at...nil-nil? (0-0 for us in the states) The USA's chances were beginning to look slimmer and slimmer, but Landon Donovan to the rescue! Less than one minute into the injury time, Donovan follows a pass he made up the field and the deflection off of the goalie went straight to him. Donovan put it right into the wide open goal and sprinted and dove on his stomach in ecstasy.
With the goal, the USA won their pool for the first time in over 70 years. They held the tiebreaker over England, who now will play powerhouse Germany in the knockout stage. We (the USA) will play Ghana, who held the tiebreaker over Australia and Serbia.
USA vs. Ghana - June 26 2:30 pm Germany vs. England - June 27 10:00 am
Even though this was an incredible victory for the USA and it came with almost no time left in the game, I think it was the second most amazing sporting event we were victorious in the past two days. This morning, (23-USA) John Isner finally defeated qualifying Frenchmen Nicolas Mahut in the first round of Wimbledon 2010.
The reason this is so incredible is because these two players took part in the longest match in professional tennis history. The three-day match was postponed Tuesday night after the fourth set due to darkness, and postponed again last night due to darkness when the players were tied at 59-59 in the fifth set. The 11 hour and five minute match concluded when Isner broke Mahut's serve to win 70-68.
The fifth set alone took over eight hours, which is long enough to break the record for the longest match ever. Both players had over 100 aces, breaking the previous record of 78 by a single player in a match.
Both players were also supposed to participate in doubles matches today. Isner missed his because he was still playing Mahut, but Mahut reportedly went to play his doubles match at the conclusion of the record-breaking one. Gosh only knows how he is still breathing, let alone playing another match in the same day.
Props to Isner for winning (go USA) and now he advances to the second round and will play tomorrow (four days in a row). Good luck to him the rest of the way.
Tonight is the NBA Draft and it is a fairly exciting time in the Baltimore/D.C. area because the Washington Wizards hold the first overall pick of the draft. John Wall is the projected first pick (even though I disagree), and many people think that the Wiz should take him.
I think a better pick would be Ohio State's Evan Turner. He won the award for the best college player, and I believe he is more NBA ready. Besides, Turner has great size (6' 7") and can play the guard or forward positions. That is a much more pressing need for them assuming Gilbert Arenas reverts back to pre-gunman form. Gil can be a great play-making point guard and even though Wall is a great player, he is going to realize that he can't run over, through, and past everyone in the NBA.
The 76ers have the second pick and what they plan to do is also very interesting. They have Jrue Holiday, a young rising point guard, and Andre Iguodala at the two position (he can play the three). Evan Turner would be a nice addition and upgrade over starting small forward, Jason Kapono. However, if the Wizards draft Turner, is Philly going to draft Wall just because he is the best available?
This should be an interesting night. ESPN @ 7:00 don't be late!
ESPN Analyst John Clayton came out with a list of the NFL QBs that he thinks are on the elite level, and I disagree with a lot of them. Let us break down the list and see where we stand.
Tom Brady, unfortunately, is a three-time Super Bowl champ. So clearly, he should be on the list. However, Joe Flacco has two years of experience on a team that is built primarily on the rushing game. This will be an important year for him because of all the weapons he now has on offense (i.e. Anquan Boldin/Donte Stallworth). Flacco is just too inexperienced to be given a crown yet, sorry bud.
No one will argue with Peyton Manning, end of story. Carson Palmer is on the edge for me because he is so talented, but he has yet to reach the next level. He hasn't done anything in the playoffs or put up 4,000 yard and 30 touchdown seasons every year, so this will be a make or break year for him. Top 10 yes, but not yet elite.
Phillip Rivers is definitely one of the best young QBs in the league, and if I had a top 10 list he would be on it. However, if I had an elite list, he wouldn't be on it. Roethlisberger has to be on it because he is a two-time Super Bowl champ. Schaub is a tough one though. I love this kid and all the amazing work he did for my fantasy football team last season, but given a few wasted seasons in Atlanta and then back to back injuries in 2008 and 2009, he has only put together one amazing season (4,700 yards and 29 TDs). If he can do it again, and again, he should be on the list but not yet.
Drew Brees is amazing and just continues to put down all of the critics, I absolutely love him. Favre, even though he screwed the Jets over, I can definitely admit is a great QB and most definitely elite when he is on the field. McNabb is someone you might not think about, but he only had one losing season his entire career in Philly and that should tell you something. He is a playmaker with his legs and his arm and will possibly bring some life to a dead Washington team.
Eli Manning I'm not really a fan of, but I do give him credit because he beat the Pats in the Super Bowl when people were talking about that New England team being the best of all-time. Not elite yet though...sorry. Aaron Rodgers is the man. He is a gun-slinger and reminds me of Favre. He is a playmaker and is only getting better, sitting on the bench behind Favre for a few seasons couldn't have hurt. He definitely belongs on the list.
Ever since Romo took over in Dallas he has done nothing but put up very impressive statistics, for an undrafted free agent nonetheless. The only question mark that could leave him off the list is what has he done for me lately...in the playoffs. He took it one step further last season and I think he belongs on the list because Dallas is a contender with him at QB.
Matt Ryan, see Joe Flacco.
So, in conclusion I've decided that John Clayton should be much tougher in his decisions and not just give it out to make sure the list if full. Just because a QB belongs in the top 10 doesn't mean he is elite.
Top 10: 1. Manning - The Best 2. Brees - Showed he can play with and beat the best 3. Favre - Who knows how long he'll play 4. Brady - Shown can be beaten...and embarrassed 5. Roethlisberger - Gosh he is ruining his career 6. McNabb - Sucks he hasn't won a Super Bowl...and got traded to Washington 7. Rodgers - Arguably the best young QB in the league 8. Romo - Proved he can win the playoffs...kind of 9. Rivers - Can't take over a game...yet 10. Palmer - This is his year...or he could be done
