CBS Radio Internship Day 3 (Yesterday)

By Dan Rodgers

Yesterday was similar to the day before. I screened calls and we had more Monster Jam tickets to give away. I edited more audio from another guest we had, Sports Illustrated's Don Banks. I had to leave after the show to go to the MVA, only to find out that I didn't have the correct paperwork.

At the end of the show when Mark Viviano was thanking everyone, he called me Matt when thanking me. Stacey corrected him for the second day in a row (on Day 2 he called me Mike). On Tuesday next week I'm going to wear a name tag as a joke.

CBS Radio Internship Day 2

By Dan Rodgers

Today was my second day on the job, er internship. I got into the action during The Mark Viviano Show. I answered phones and screened calls during the show while Stacey Brown did the usual stuff producing, running the board and doing sports updates.

Nothing too crazy about screening calls, however, Stacey did give me a few tips:

  • Filled me in on the regular callers
  • What to tell people if you can't hear them
  • How to take care of prize callers
In the final hour of the show (11-12), I got to edit the audio clips from the two guests that were on the show. Eric Gordon, a physical therapist of the Gordon Institute, and Keith Cavanaugh of the Terrapin Times.

At the end of the show, Mark announced that caller five would receive two tickets to the Monster Jam. That was probably the craziest part of the day. Stacey waited for the third caller and then picked them up and took down their information. I then proceeded pick up the eight other phone lines and tell people that we already had a winner. It was amazing how many people kept calling in, even a few minutes after the rush was gone.

After the show, Stacey and I went back to her office and she showed me how to post the two edited audio clips onto the 105.7 The Fan website. We posted the two podcasts and then I left for the day.

CBS Radio Internship Day 1

By Dan Rodgers

Tuesday February 15, 2011 was my first day on the job. The job being my programming internship with CBS Radio Baltimore's 105.7 The Fan. I do work in the promotions department with them as well, but this internship is to earn credit for school.

Since today my first day, my supervisor had me observe the Mark Viviano Show and in her words, "watch the chaos."

After the show, I went into the office and watched/kind of helped my supervisor, Stacey Brown, edit audio from the show to post online at 1057thefan.com.

It wasn't a very hectic day for me, but I look forward to Thursday when I'll be given some responsibilities during the show.

MLB needs more Hollidays

By Dan Rodgers

Happy Valentine's Day everyone. It's the most wonderful time of the year, MLB Spring Training begins today. Major League Baseball is a fantastic thing and is reserved for the select few who have respect for it.

One thing that teams deal with before the season and during spring training is re-signing players whose contracts expire at the end of the year. Albert Pujols, arguably the best player in baseball, is set to be a free agent at the conclusion of this coming season.

Pujols gave the Cardinals a deadline of Wednesday the 16 by noon to come up with a contract offer. Pujols also stated that if he doesn't agree to the deal he is ceasing all negotiations and declaring free agency after the season.

In a kind of related act, Cards OF Matt Holliday came out and said he would be interested in deferring money if it would help keep Big Al in St. Louis. Something every coach, GM and owner wants to hear, but no agent wants to hear (per usatoday.com):

"I [Holliday] deferred $2 million a year for the whole contract. I would be willing, if they [Cardinals management] came to me and said, 'Hey, this is what it's going to take to get Albert done, would you do it again or do more?' Scott (Boras) probably wouldn't like me to say that, but if that's what it took, I would be willing to do that."

I don't know about you but Holliday should be praised for this. I professional athlete who is making millions upon millions of dollars said he would give some back if it would help the team sign their best player. That is the ultimate team act and something I would look for in a player: putting the team before yourself.
